Newark City Council voted 5-1 Monday to explore the pros and cons of switching from traditional voting to ranked-choice voting, which advocates say gives more depth to your vote, especially in highly-contested elections.
It encourages civil campaigning.
City Councilman Jay Bancroft introduced the topic, and said it can force candidates to be less bombastic to avoid being in an all-or-nothing position with voters.
“It encourages civil campaigning. It sticks to the issues. If you want to curry favor as the second-choice voice, you’re not going to go belittling ad hominem the other opponents in your race.”
