With or without the Cook County Clerk’s support, Evanston City Council members are moving forward with a new ranked choice voting system for the city, introducing an ordinance Monday establishing their right to make such a move.
Council members voted 7-1 to introduce the ordinance, establishing the method under which voters would choose elected officials for certain city offices starting with the April 1, 2025 municipal election.
Voters overwhelmingly approved
Evanston voters overwhelmingly approved a referendum on the ballot in the November 2022 election asking voters whether they favored the city moving to a ranked choice voting system starting with the April 2025 consolidated election.
The ordinance directs the county clerk to specifically implement ranked choice voting as prescribed. It pledges full cooperation with the county clerk in that effort.
